Covid has exposed authoritarian tendencies in the bureaucracies of every country in the world, even the oldest democracies. China is actively pitching authoritarian bureaucracy as an alternative to liberal democracy, to any country who will (or can be paid to) listen. The stage is set for a new Cold War.

"China's system got a lot more superior when it got a lot more capitalist." Yup. And the West's systems got a lot more stable when they introduced social welfare programs. (Possibly too stable, with the permanent dependent class, and all.) The Capitalist vs. Communist phase of the dialectic is over, with a range of syntheses. (Marx was wrong about the "End of History".) But, so was Fukuyama. We're seeing the thesis of Liberal Democracy now challenged by its antithesis, Authoritarian Bureaucracy. Will that take the next 30 or 40 years to work itself out? That sounds entirely plausible to me.

Were none of the Middle Eastern wars, declared? Were any of the wars against Israel declared? What about Iran / Iraq?

@aaronazagoth6373 The tricky part here is, most of the chattering classes (such as Ferguson here) have sympathies with the Authoritarian Bureaucrats. The argument (so far) is literally one-sided, because the people with the most time to sit around and argue (or are even paid to do so), are for the most part on the authoritarian side because they just love to have their ideas implemented. Now, this isn't the end of the world; there is some value to people sitting around thinking, publishing the results of that thinking, and people generally reading what they publish. I own some of Niall's books, myself. However, we're going to have to make it crystal clear to them that we, the people, WILL NOT TOLERATE their using state coercion to implement their ideas. Publish and we'll read, talk and we'll listen. Then WE will decide what to do. And if they don't like it, tough.

So, it will take roughly the length of a Cold War, to work out the deficiencies of China's program? Sounds about right to me.
