On the one hand Freedom -- freedom of speech, free and fair elections so (like the market in economics) regular people with distributed cognition can all bring their experiences (and expertise) to the table. On the other hand, Mandarins -- the Elite class that claims a monopoly on expertise, despite the fact that the Information Revolution has democratized expertise like never before. This is the genius that the uniquely American spirit can bring to the world. THIS is why it's worthwhile to reinvigorate our frontier spirit, our independent individual excellence. It's completely in keeping with the character of our institutions and our history, recent and distant. This is the grand narrative that we need to push, to maintain the best of the American character, that I believe you all are looking for these days.
