As far as I can tell from the interests of both countries, Russia is resource-rich, and China is resource-hungry. This wouldn't be the first time Russia made a pact with the up-and-coming power in exchange for a slice of Eastern Europe, and they didn't enjoy that either. It was less than two years between the partition of Poland and the start of Barbarossa. I'm not actually surprised at all, that he's still got troops in the Russian Far East.
