Christian church services used to consist of three segments: 1) The service of the Word, where people heard the Bible read. 2) The service of catechesis, where the pastor taught those who wanted to know more 3) The service of communion, where the Mass / Eucharist was celebrated among those who believed and were baptized People would leave the service when they had gotten what they came for, based on their level of connection with the faith, and that was expected.
