We live in a Federal system. You have to get a majority of the states to go along with an idea to make it a law at the Federal level. At more local levels, however, individual states (or even cities) can make laws reflecting their own ideas and values, without imposing those laws on other states with different ideas and values. This is a vastly stronger system than one where the population of a handful of large cities imposes their will on the rest of the country. That's why the Electoral College still exists.

Right, because what we really need in this country is more polarization? Seriously, our politics are so vicious because we have so many political topics that are subject to decisions by the winner-take-all Federal government. If we allowed more subjects to be decided at a more local level -- at state, county, or municipal level -- the lower the stakes of would be, at every level. Wherever people lived, they would have a higher percentage of the laws they were subject to, that were to their liking.
