"Because education is important everywhere in the country, the federal government should be involved" No. Because education is important everywhere in the country, the federal government doesn't need to be involved, because it's important enough for states (and counties, and cities) to take care of it themselves. It's when something is important in one place but not in another -- for example, dumping toxic waste into a river just as it flows into another state -- that the federal government needs to adjudicate.
