  1. Putin has to chafe at being under the Chinese thumb. Xi is going to the former Soviet republics in Central Asia, and excluding him. I have to wonder, instead of losing so badly to China, would Putin prefer to have a sphere of influence in Tibet, East Turkmenistan, Greater Mongolia, and even an independent Manchuria?
