The native population of North America collapsed from about 100 million pre-Columbus, to 10 million in the time it took smallpox (tuberculosis, plague, etc) to go from one end of the continent to the other. Most of the spread was probably via wildlife and escaped livestock, most notably pigs. That natural depopulation made the settlement of North America completely different than the case of the Middle East.
