  3. Regarding autism -- Stanford researchers were able to predict whether babies would develop autism. The babies were shown videos of kids interacting, and researchers watched where their eyes were pointing. Most babies (by instinct, it seems) pointed their eyes at the faces of the kids on the video. Babies that would go on to show signs of autism, focused on whatever was moving in the video, basically ignoring faces unless they moved a lot. The less people watch faces, the more signs of autism they show. I suspect that autism is a syndrome -- a collection of symptoms. It may have a variety of causes, just like there are a variety of things that can cause a cough or a stomach ache.
