Is the music a character? Whether a music director is asking too much, (aside from the question of whether he can get the results some less costly way) depends entirely on the value the director and performers (and audience) put on the music. That said, it absolutely a good thing for art to explore questions of "how far is too far", in an imaginative setting where everyone can get up and walk away at the end of a take (or a movie).
