  1. Orwell's experiences in the BBC and with the POUM in Catalonia drove him to write this book. A lot of this is just extrapolating from events and trends he had already experienced at the hands of socialists.

  2.  @FunnyLittleFella  ?? The POUM were anarcho-socialists. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POUM The BBC, well, they were a bureaucratic nightmare at least, if not out-and-out socialist. Perhaps it's more accurate to tie the habit of damnatio memoriae to Soviet practices.
