It's not the "black hobbits" that would tarnish Tolkien's legacy, so much as un-Catholic and deeply un-Christian values overwhelming his underlying message. The Downfall of Numenor is about people seeking eternal life by pridefully setting themselves above their gods, led astray by a power-hungry renegade. They are destroyed for their hubris and treason, with only a few surviving. I can only imagine that the Sea-Kings are going to be "made more relevant" by casting them as imperialists...

As much as I admire Christopher Lee (both as an actor and as a man, read a biographical sketch sometime) I think that Patrick Stewart might have done a better job as Saruman - smoother, more persuasive.
