  2. Is there an English-language collection of the notes of the Japanese envoys (explorers, really) or the discussions the Japanese leadership had when these explorers got back, to decide which Western practices to appropriate? That would be fascinating reading, I think.

  3. Ahem. Japan was so closed off, they refused to sign standard international treaties allowing for the repatriation of shipwrecked sailors. Naval lore was (and it was correct), if you wrecked off Japan, you never saw home again even if you survived. This made the navy saltier than usual in their insistence to open Japan up.
