"It's probably not a coastal vs. interior thing" OK, so I'm reading The Accidental Superpower. If river networks are so great and generate so much capital, why the h**l is New York our financial capital as opposed to, say, St. Louis? If oceans are less-good than rivers, why is our river-girded interior considered "flyover country"? By the way, it strikes me as incredibly fortunate that Manifest Destiny caught on, because otherwise we'd see a tripartite America -- Atlantic Seaboard / Heartland / Pacific and Mountain. We almost had this with English / French / Spanish, but accidents of history transpired otherwise. We'd be a continent full of garrison states like Europe, with all the unhappiness that entails.

"We should expect the pace of technological change to slow dramatically in the decades to come" What if the price of energy finally does go "too cheap to meter" because of fusion? You get a lot of evolution when a population sees massive new opportunities, and endless energy is a massive opportunity.

"Boomer capital will go into investments that are decidedly not risky venture capital" Um, are Boomers really as important in the VC space as High Net Worth Individuals? Hasn't the last decade or two been a story of how HNWIs have been come Really Extremely HNWIs? How do your estimates change if you take individuals into account, in addition to your geographic and demographic forces? By the way, if you've read Isaac Asimov's "Foundation", you should probably also read Connie Willis' more recent "To Say Nothing of the Dog", they both deal with historical forces and confounding factors.
