Does Peter ever discuss productivity-led economic growth in detail? Seems to me that the Numbers Go Up obsession ("Japan will never experience economic growth again") when focused on top-line Gross Domestic Product, leads to horrifically bad economic decisions like allowing cartels of human traffickers to take control of your national borders.

@tk80mufa5 Er, the Opium Wars were a couple hundred years ago now, fought primarily to maintain balance of trade with China due to the popularity of tea (and the critical nature of tea duties to the British budget). There really isn't a "tax base" argument you can make for today's drug trade. That position is staked out by the "legalize / regulate / tax" crowd.

"The Japanese had massive loans to cover investments that should never have been made in the first place" Kind of like the infrastructure we're building out to manufacture electric cars that no one wants to buy? As PJ O'Rourke pointed out, this was the downfall of the USSR too -- "A huge totalitarian system with all its tanks and g*ns, gulag camps and secret police has been brought to its knees because nobody wants to wear Bulgarian shoes."
