  2. We're old enough to know that ten years is not that long. How does this affect geopolitics? Does it solve every energy issue everywhere, leading to a total revision of the petrochemical energy economy? Would cratering demand, lead to the economic argument for a very expensive US Navy presence in the Persian Gulf, a less attractive option than just letting Iran / Saudi Arabia / Turkey slug it out, and everyone else relying on domestic sources? Does it allow ground-based laser defenses to make any country that can build a few of these plants, effectively immune to nuclear attack? Exercise for the student: Redraw the board without oil, without nukes, (at least for countries well-capitalized enough to build these fusion plants), with the demographics of 2040. Go!
