At what point will the excellent seaport at the mouth of the Hudson river watershed (which is rather smallish, as watersheds go) lose its pride of place, in favor of a port with access to a much larger river network? Zeihan's entire "rivers mean capital" thesis seems to point to an inevitable secular decline in New York's fortunes, now that the historical accident of New York's role as an intercontinental immigration entrepot has faded into the past.

  3. Why is "green field" necessary for industry, rather than "existing infrastructure"? Wasn't the garment industry absolutely huge in New York, within living memory?
