Wouldn't it make more sense for Russia to sabotage someone else's pipeline? That would help get across Putin's point that the physical world still matters in ways that the cyber world does not, without removing a possible carrot from the negotiating table. We have to take into account the idea that whoever did this was not being entirely rational or sensible when they did, although Zeihan makes the point fairly well that Putin isn't anywhere near as irrational as his opponents make him out to be.

@MrGreenTabasco Easy enough to find Chinese fingerprints on it. =)

Who has the capability to fix these in the near term?

You'd think that if this was the Russians, they'd have hit THAT pipeline instead.

@patclark2186 So, whoever is doing this will have to be persuaded to stop doing this. In a way that will dissuade anyone else from copying them. Ouch.

@ClassyMonkey1212 Yes, but can they afford to do so (allegedly, this has a ~$1B price tag) during a war?

@ClassyMonkey1212 Ha, probably

Can China operate that far from home? (If "anyone with scuba gear could do this", shouldn't we consider them carefully?) Seems like they have an interest in stirring the pot between the US/EU and Russia, weakening Europe, and encouraging Russia to look East for markets for their energy.
