I heard that the British frequently lost money on their Empire, while the French, Dutch, and Spanish tended to beat their profits out of the natives. "The British left the local governing structures in place" Really? I know that in India, they not only stripped the local princes of their hereditary powers, they also streamlined the bureaucracy by firing lots of their traditional bureaucrats.
