Peter Thiel has pointed out that in the last fifty years or so, innovation in the material world has ground to a screeching halt, with the only innovation we've seen being in the realm of bits. Getting the smartest people back onto the factory floor, is likely to open up innovation again.

@werrrp Compared to leaps like airplanes, radio, television, and the internal combustion engine, that were happening 100 years ago? Not really. Things have slowed WAY down in the physical space.

@lizardking3979 Advancements in materials science and sensors can also make a difference. You're right though. Back before they ran out of physics jokes (and it was all downhill from there), even Big Bang Theory observed it -- Penny: "So what's new in physics?" - Leonard: "Not much really, since the 1930s."

@Rocketsong Let me know when you have superconductivity at 100 degrees F. Heck, even room-temperature would be interesting.

Peter: "People with college degrees will have to get used to jobs on assembly lines" Also Peter: "These new manufacturing plants only need like two people to run them -- one operator and one tech" Both could certainly be true, in various situations. Which industries will go one way, and which will go the other?
