"Increased mortality over time seems to be a better metric" Not really, you have to assume that there is only one explanation for excess mortality, and that your actions to reduce mortality (through lockdowns) are not actually contributing to higher mortality for whatever reason or combination of reasons. (Missed medical checkups, degraded health from lack of sunlight, exercise, and fresh air, depression, etc).
