  1. The Enlightenment did not lead to a better morality for a more peaceful age. The desire to exercise of Power by the Hapsburgs was more responsible for their 30 Years' War against France, the other major Catholic power of Europe, than doctrinal differences. The very model of the Enlightenment ruler was the Enlightened Despot -- for example, Frederick the Great. Now, Frederick the Great was arguably the founder of Prussian Militarism, which plagued the European continent for centuries and required two world wars and the de-Germanization of Prussia itself, to beat it out of them. The fact is that "Enlightenment Values" absent the good influence of Christianity have always been a path to "the abyss of a new dark age, made more sinister and perhaps more prolonged by the lights of a perverted science". Remember, the Marquis de Sade was also an Enlightenment thinker.
