Academics as a species only have the memory of a predator -- "Jocks" or "Cheerleaders". Look at the people they tend to try to destroy.

To be fair to a religion with pronounced pacifist leanings, it really is bit cruel to say that religion doesn't get to persuade others to their point of view.

The ultimate problem with Marxism is that it is not Hegelian enough. Marx found a popular intellectual tool (the dialectic) and then twisted it so that it would point to his pet project, communism. An honest (and more illuminating) approach would have been to take Communism as a thesis, Capitalism as an anti-thesis, and conclude that something like a welfare state would be the next stage in human governance. (I could go into a digression about academics are Platonists who have everything pretty much backwards, but I'll refrain.) What the universities COULD be usefully discussing is the next stage of the dialectic -- what flaws in the Welfare State necessitate an antithesis? Does the lack of economic viability of the Welfare State make the TEA Party an antithesis? Is the Welfare State so inevitably a Nanny State, and therefore Libertarianism is the proper antithesis? Or is the essence of the Welfare State a totalizing impulse, making Brexit / Trumpism / Freedom of Conscience the natural antithesis? Is the true antithesis some combination of those?

If you deny aid to countries for their policy of executing gay people, wouldn't it make sense to also deny aid to those countries for policies of executing apostates (converts to Christianity)?

Douglas, would you sacrifice gay marriage as part of a revival of a type of Christianity that could be the foundation of the West again? To be a bit more cheerful about it -- Douglas, thinking about all the sacrifices men have had to make to make the West what it has been... would you throw yourself on a bombshell if that was how you did your bit to save the West? ;) I'm sure there's more than one that admires your mind sufficient to meet any emotional challenges that might have to be overcome.

If a person listens to a professor who says "All human relationships are based on power" and says in turn, "That sounds legit, it matches well with my experience and point of view", wouldn't that suggest that the listener has sociopathic tendencies?
