@Make_Boxing_Great_Again Archaeological evidence supports it as well. As does the social development of the entire Mediterranean basin for the succeeding centuries, the entirety of Europe for a couple of millennia, and the entire world for the last few centuries. But aside from that? I guess there isn't any evidence. How blind you are.

@Make_Boxing_Great_Again The Creator of the universe is able to make the universe bend to His will? I've used by brain to program enough simulations, that this is entirely plausible. Do you have any new arguments for atheism? The old ones from the last decade (or older) are pretty threadbare at this point.

@thedude0000 Er, no. The Bible is consistent enough on enough points that you can create a solid foundation for a culture from it. If you're talking transubstantiation vs. consubstantiation it starts to get a little murky, but that only really gets to be a problem when Rome imposes taxes to build themselves churches with Renaissance levels of decoration, or when the Hapsburgs want to take over Europe.

@thedude0000 Nonsense. Read Paul's letter to Philemon and the book of Exodus (or even Deuteronomy) if you'd like to know what the Bible says about slavery and emancipation. Christians (William Wilberforce in England, the Quakers in America) were at the head of the Protestant versions of the abolition movement, and the Catholic Church - from popes to ecclesiastical councils - have been at the center of that for centuries. So... pretty consistent, there. Can someone claim that the Bible supports slavery? Only if you ignore the parts that condemn it as evil and celebrate the freeing of slaves, and you instead emphasize the passages about ameliorating the condition of slaves as somehow "justifying" the practice. To claim that Christianity supports slavery when it has been the foundation of abolition, is either ignorance, stupidity, or malice. We're not supposed to assume malice where stupidity is a sufficient expalnation, right?

You know, despite being a Christian, when I was a kid I would have dismissed this as overreacting -- but I've seen what happened in the last 40 years, and now I completely agree with your take here.

For those who are simply unable to believe in the verity of the Gospels: Consider, if the Bible is not the Word of God, what is it? "Bronze age fables" needlessly denigrates the usefulness of fables. If the hare is overconfident, can the slow and steady tortoise not win? Have you never met someone who deprecated something unattainable, like the fox and his "sour grapes"? We should be careful not to dismiss wisdom. "But that was from long ago!" is the protest. Are you pretending that Christian theologians -- often the most brilliant men of their time -- have not been wrangling over one thing and another during those intervening centuries? Rerum Novarum is not the only document dealing with the novel. "Things have changed so much!" others will say. Have they, though? Children are still conceived and born the same way; jealousy has not been defeated in the human heart, and it likely never will be. Orienting the privileges of family life around fertile couples should not be lightly dismissed in a country with a collapsing birthrate. This is just to name one part of human nature that even the ancients would have recognized. Please reflect: The West, including just about every value you imagine, is built on a foundation of Christianity. (See Tom Holland's book "Dominion"). Not Islam, not Confucianism, not Buddhism, not Paganism, not various atheistic blunders of the 20th century so blood-soaked as to prove Christianity's pacifist bona fides. If you simply can't be one of the people who believes Christianity to be true, and you must be a philosopher who believes it false, at least be judicious and believe it to be useful.

@Str4t0sph4r4 Have a look at the New Testament (the books Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, in the Bible.) Some editions even have Jesus' words in red type, so they're easier to notice.

@thedude0000 Of course not -- the Gospel specifically deprecates jumping off of buildings. You've never chosen to believe any news report, when you had no way of independently verifying it?

@thedude0000 I once witnessed a pigeon-murder. I was waiting at an intersection for the light to change. I noticed two pigeons fighting in midair, when one grabbed the other in its claws, swooped across my car's hood, and dropped it directly under the tire of a truck in the left-turn lane that had just started to roll because the light had turned. It was, as Carl Sagan might say, extraordinary. However, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence" is egotistical verging on solipsistic. (Not exactly a surprise, considering Sagan's overall personality.) The evidence I can provide for this is basically the words you have read. That degree of evidence does not affect the fact that it's true. You can choose to believe it, or not.

@thedude0000 You're arguing semantics. "High bar" and "Extraordinary" are synonyms in this case. Your insistence that God doesn't exist (to the point of taking the time and trouble to engage in this debate) leads me to believe you've got a particular reason you don't want God to exist. What might that be?
