  3.  dfctomm  Were there selfish and short-sighted Republicans in California, who profited from exploiting cheap southern labor? Sure, I'd buy that. But I'm not convinced that VDH is among them. That said, I'm not as familiar as I should be with the fall of the California GOP. The Republicans are reluctant to talk about it, and I wouldn't trust anything the Democrats had to say on the subject.
