  2. The historic reason that America is in favor of free trade, reaches back to the Atlantic Charter and the economic root causes of the World Wars. Japan hit Pearl Harbor because we cut off oil and scrap metal supplies to them, because they had invaded China. They invaded China, to gain raw materials for their growing industries. This was a major driver of European wars too, through the last few centuries. The theory was, that American "Open Door" trade policy -- where anyone can buy whatever they could afford from whomever had it to sell -- was going to remove this as a cause of war. See: the Atlantic Charter. If you want to know whether a politico has given this any deep historic thought, ask them if they know a historian named Alfred Thayer Mahan (or, bare minimum, the Washington Treaty). Basically every power broker from the late 19th century up until 1939 was singing from Mahan's hymnal.
