Absolutely. In the near future I expect to see it mandated, that this type of testing be done before any such dive is permitted. And all submersibles will have to be a) certified and b) have a similarly capable buddy-sub at the surface, prepared to assist in an emergency.

@MrTimbeatty And became weaker with each subsequent use. (And it was never tested to failure - all hypothetical - past 3800 M it achieved.)

The only way the ends could 'separate' would be inward. At that depth the pressure would prevent anything other than an intentional explosion from within. I think more likely as a cause of failure was the 'view-port'; I understand Stockton bragged about the use of off-the-shelf parts and I believe the porthole they used was only rated for less than 2,000 M. That would be the weak point, IMO. It led to the same thing - a catastrophic implosion resulting in a quick demise; with a lot of tragedy left behind.

@andrewcharlton4053 Yup. But they chose to cut testing and certification in exchange for expediency and 'innovation' in design. They paid a heavy price.
