Love this sort of thing, I did a family tree and found out, in 1860 my gt gt grandfather went to India after joining the Staffordshire 1st of foot, back then, they took their wives and children along. It would be incredible to learn more

My great great grandfather Walter Slater was actually there, and later was ordered to India 38th Staffordshire 1st of foot and would love to hear from anyone researching the 38th

Does anyone on here have an great great grandfather from the Staffordshire 1st of foot ?

@TheHistoryChap He was Walter Slater, but like most, used a false name when he joined, and reverted back to his name some time after, between action in the Crimea and India he contracted TB he had a good army record and yet 3 times up on cort marshall charges, it was more common then most think, until i began my family tree i knew nothing about him, his medals that he actually wore were sold at auction for which i have photo of, his army record death certificate all very interesting but so sad i will never know what he looked like

Walter Slater served in the The Indian Rebellion of 1857, not sure who originally sold his medals but they resurfaced in SPINKS auctioneer and sold for £300, he also 3 years earlier saw action in Crimea

@TheHistoryChap Like many of the time, Walter enlisted with a fake name, choosing his wife's name of Hiorns and not Slater that was later changed back, unlike in the films, he saw 3 court Marshall reviews due to fighting, not doing what he was told, and gambling which was normally settled with a fine or reduction in pay. What is very interesting is his wife and their children born in India, as you know within 9 months of where the army, or his regiment was as the wives were allowed to follow

Walter Slater my great great grandfather served in Staffordshire 1st of foot and saw action in both Crimea and the Indian Rebellion, on 3 charges of court marshall over a period of 20 years service, Private Walter Slater returned to England with his wife and new children

@TheHistoryChap Walter came from Oxfordshire, very poor as most were back then, married and in need of money, got caught stealing a clothes line, he was twenty years old, 2 months hard labour, joined the Staffordshire regiment shortly after. When you see the battles that were documented in the Crimea its amazing how he survived let alone go into India
