Why did a canal why not just build it on top of the ground (kind of like an aqueduct) and then have locks on the sides where you pump in water to raise boats to the level of the "canal" and lower them back down. I mean you'd have locks at the ends anyway and this way you'd save trillion in the cost of digging it. A cheaper canal would mean that repaying the loans to china would be a lot more feasibly and reduce the risk of it being a problem. And also you wouldn't use the same route as the proposed canal so if you wanted to you could always build that too from the profits of the aqueduct.
