1. They didn't have a separate country. They had an autonomous republic inside russia.
2. Chechens were and still are ultra nationalistic, which led them to expell, kill and rob non-Chechen population, which at the time, in the beginning of the 1990's was around 40% of the total population of chechnya. They were massacring everyone: russians, Ukrainians, Armenians and even their fellow Ingushs, who are supposed to be their sister people. They had a slogan: "russians to Ryazan, Ingush to Narzan, Tatars to Kazan".
3. Chechens belong to one of the most cruel and ruthless ethnic groups in russia, as well as in countries of EU. They tend to organise criminal gangs and live off various violent crimes.
