The Car Care Nut

My guess is the reminder light is at 5K miles but the paperwork says 10K miles. That is what my 2014 Prius has - I go by the oil change reminder and our favorite Car Care Nut.

@LORD_OF_THE_ROOTS "Don't care what a lab said." Absolutely! The lab results tell you what damage is being done. That leads to the acceptance of the smallest progressive damage, not the highest miles without damage.

Good choices! We have bought nothing but Toyotas since 2001 and are much happier for it. We are on our third Prius (2014) after the first and second were damaged beyond repair when other cars hit them quite hard.

I promise not to throw things (except maybe flowers) at you! We are on our second used 3rd gen Prius. The 2010 was a great car until it seemed to become magnetized; in a handful of months it was sideswiped by a driver beside my wife swerved into the side of it because of another driver pulling in front of the other guy. Insurance paid for it, but a couple months later a deer ran from the forest and hit the driver door; insurance paid again. Then a young lady who thought she didn't really need her anti-seizure medication and ran into the passenger doors of of our parked car. Insurance totaled the car; it could still be driven but the passenger side doors and probably more were consigned to history. We bought a 2014 Prius and I maintained it according to the schedule in the glove box, except I changed the oil when the reminder said to: every 5K miles. Then I saw in the glove box info that the oil should be changed every 10K miles. We were up to about 7K when you said not to, and explained why. I immediately did an oil change and have followed the 5K reminder ever since. Short form of it: I am deeply thankful for your warning about the trap of 10K mile changes, especially since most of our driving is in town! At about 220K miles, our 2014 Prius is by far the most reliable car we have had in our half century together.

@N1withaskillet Our 2014 Prius is getting near 230K miles. Not a sign of trouble, although the shocks/struts are getting old....

@albundy3929 Yet he is a straight shooter. ChrisFix is very similar; I'm sure he makes good money from YT but is a great mechanic and mentor in his own right. The world would be a poorer place if either of them left YouTube.

I learned a few years ago to ignore Carfax entirely. Shockingly high errors, particularly in non-reported events but also in events that never occurred. Maybe they have cleaned up their act, but even at that I can say every car I have had would show a failure to change oil. I have done my own services for everything besides those that require special skills and/or equipment. Carfax settled a class action suit (Davis, et al. v. Carfax, Inc., et al.) in 2013, and they may well be doing better recently. On the other hand, our cars won't show any maintenance history because I never report it. I'm more interested in keeping our cars in proper working order.

@jwg9338 There is nothing wrong with Amsoil unless extended change intervals are involved. It is not magic. One cold, hard truth about extended service intervals is that the effective life of motor oils is determined not by breakdown of the oil but by contamination, particularly nitrous/nitric acid from burning hydrocarbons (gasoline) at high pressure in a nitrogen rich atmosphere (air.) Synthetics resist breakdown well, but they become acidic as the miles rack up.
