I was preparing to go to the 10K mile change interval the 2014 Prius maintenance schedule called for instead of the 5K mile interval the reminder had. Then I saw your video a while back that warned 10K mile changes were a bad idea. I think you saved me from a horrible mistake. (Edit) Seeing exactly why the delayed oil changes cause such serious damage really clarifies it.

@chrisengle2315 In Sacramento County, California, it is now illegal to change your own oil or even to own special automotive tools (like oil filter wrench) for doing it. In Flagstaff, Arizona, I do my own oil changes with Mobil 1 0W-20 and a filter from the dealer.

Our 2014 Prius reminds us to "perform service" every 5K miles while the maintenance schedule calls for it every 10K miles. I almost went to 10K mile intervals until CCN warned me away.

The engine is port injection - the 2ARFE engine, I think.

A quick google reveals a lot of Yaris owners are complaining about it, and a leading suspect is a hardened o-ring on the tensioner. There are a couple of YouTube videos; I hope our host can shed some light on that. YT has been automatically deleting comments with external links for a while, so I will try the internal links in a separate reply.

@elusivellama I looked up (not easy to do) about average vehicle life in the UK. 300K km is very rare there but is completely normal for well maintained Toyotas and a few other well-made makes in the US.

@UsoundsGermany The big change occurred around 1980, when there were demands for better fuel economy. Those changes demanded higher engine temperatures and that in turn challenged the oil a lot more. Now the US requirements for fuel economy have lead to lower piston ring tension and poorer oil control.

@drwookiee1 Agree - but it may not have been 0W-20 either. 5W-30 is available in conventional and lots of quick lube places use it instead of the proper oil.

@babagandu I hope you have more great mechanics there already. We were lucky to get him and his new shop is what the community needs.

I don't think the required 0W-20 oil is available in anything besides synthetic.
