The Car Care Nut

I was happy to see the flat spot warning right at the beginning. A family member was medically ineligible to drive his car for what turned out to be several months. It made flat spots on all the tires, and driving a few days didn't help. Four new tires was needed to get them right. Great idea about taping the plastic bags over them, too! I'm surprised I don't see objections about the battery situation, though: technically, the alternators are capable of recharging a nearly dead battery. They can't do it without wear and tear to the battery and alternator though, so your advice is still exactly right. A 100 amp alternator will not put out more than roughly a hundred amps, even into a short circuit, because that limit is what it is capable of producing with 14V excitation voltage at any rpm. The inductance of the windings (which are on the AC side of the bridge) exactly balances the increase in EMF as rpm increases above roughly half the alternator's design speed. At full rated output the alternator quickly becomes a lot hotter than it was designed to be; okay for a few minutes but destructive as the heat builds.
