  1. 11 months is an exageration, There were several period s where it was not a focus at all in the start of the war. The size of the "steppign stone" is not so relevant, but the control of the roads and intersection at bakhmut that make its loss problematic for Ukraine. When you lose these intersections suddenly your army mobility and logistics gets slower and it is harder to react.
