  1. That is really important. School examples tend to be made with small numbers . But if you are for example ordering memory segments of your memory allocator the story is not the same.

What I find sad on computer science teaching is that most explanations and algorithms fail at the real world because these simplistic abstractions forego how real computers work, specially cache coherence. Depending the size of your objects and / or the complexity of the compare operation different algorithms will get on top.
