@wim0104 how much is the fluid from Subaru? 🤔

Currently have a 2012 Forester engine out for pistons, rings and bearings. Was drinking 1 qt/500 miles!! Exhaust valves were trashed! Head valve job $550.00.

My guess is 8 valves bent. Absolutely no compression.

Just picked up an '03 Forester with just under 170,000 on it. Live in MN rust belt. This car was Zebarted so it's clean for the year. Engine will be pulled, and total gasket/seal) timing belt replacement. Seller thought the head gaskets were bad. Nope, lower rad hose clamp failure!

How do you get stubborn engines and transmissions separated? Any tips? Are there any special tools for this task?

Just did this on our '03 Forester. I also replaced the weather stripping on both doors. Wind noise drove me nuts!

Very helpful! Thanks,!

I've got AC on all of my beaters!

@MrSubaru1387 I have an idea for a tool. I just used it to remove an engine from a '12 Forester. No hammering, or prying. Interested? 🤔

Any info on an 03 Forester AC system. Can't get the output temperature below 55°F. Do these have blend door issues? Low gauge at around 35psi. High around 200. Took a garden hose and rinsed the evaporator. Temp didn't change with water on evaporator. Electronic control. Both fans running.

How much do you struggle splitting the engine from the transmission?

Just hit 200,000 on my '03 Forester. I replaced the Head gaskets because of oil leaking. Thought for sure I had solved my oil consumption. Well, not the case. I'm still using more oil that I like. Quart around 1500 miles. Don't see any leaks. No smoke on startup or during running. Cat cleaning up the smoke? Where's it going? I also smell coolant at some time. Thanks for your thoughts. Replaced the struts at the same time. FYI

When I replaced the head gaskets in my '03 Forester, the machinist warned me about disturbing the valve springs to replace the valve seals because the valves wouldn't seal after that. I didn't replace them, but now, I'm not sure he was correct.

It would be interesting to know how the oil tested! 🤔

Why is oil replaced under a time saying 6 months? What does the oil look and test like after sitting for 6 months in an engine?

At what point is cleaning a sparkplug cost wise costing more than to replace them? 🤔

@EyeMWing thank you for the good answers! Much appreciated!

@volks-jager would you buy a tool that doesn't require any hammering or prying? I developed one. Just checking out interest.

@LastChanceforGas were you going through about the same amount of oil? I'm considering rebuilding it. I do hear some piston slap when it's cold. The cylinder walls looked great when I had the heads off. I didn't replace the valve seals at the advice of the machinist saying the valves wouldn't seal after pulling the keepers and springs. I really don't think that would happen. Could be wrong.

@LastChanceforGas how much wear did you see on the bearings?
1
@LastChanceforGas how much oil can be sucked through valve seals? ..... thinking...

@LastChanceforGas subscribed to your channel. If you want to see some amateur videos, check out my channel. Thanks for the advice about the Subaru engine!

@LastChanceforGas how is it to splitting the crankcase? Not my first rodeo on engine work, but it is with Subaru. Thanks for your input!
1
@LastChanceforGas did you use their timing belt and components?
1
@LastChanceforGas Naturally Aspirated on this one. Would like a turbo some time. Just needed something to get through snow. The Forester does the job with snow tires.

Guides and chain plates, pins do wear. So, yes, if the engine is apart, I'd replace the timing set. How much oil are you going through? None? 1qt between changes? 1 qt every 1000 or less miles? My '03 Forester was using a qt to around 1000 miles. Pulled it down and found the oil return holes behind the oil control ring completely plugged with baked brown carbon! I used a drill in a drill motor to clean them. I haven't driven it far enough to know what the oil consumption is at 5000 miles. I do know it was a drastic improvement!
1
@mattrockman1028 that's excessive oil consumption! I'll be putting pistons and rings in a friends 2010 Outback. Currently I had wished I had replaced the pistons on my '03 Forester when I did the rings. Has a bit of piston slap during warmup. What are you taking your engine apart for? 🤔
