Nixon always wanted to be Kennedy's friend. When they were freshman house members they did a mini-debate (I believe it was in Pennsylvania) and travelled back to DC together, sharing a sleeper on the train and having a good time. Joe Kennedy told Nixon that if Jack didn't get the nomination in 1960 he would support of him over Johnson or Humphrey. When Kennedy had his back surgery as a senator Nixon went out of his way to accommodate him, to check on his recovery etc. in a very sincere manner. He was genuinely concerned for him. But Kennedy treated Nixon like he treated most people outside of his inner circle, rather shabbily. Kennedy did stick up for Nixon over the way Ike treated him, calling Ike a cold hearted SOB but that had to do with how Ike treated Kennedy as well. Everyone wanted be Kennedy's friend and by and large he didn't have time for most of them.

@rhondabitler5474 JFK knew he needed Johnson in 1960 so he brought him on as VP but they were never close. Kennedy was warry of Johnson's habit of making whatever office he held more important than it had been before he arrived. But he did treat him decently, about as decent as most VP's get treated. He gave him stuff to do like running NASA and the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity but he didn't have any real power in either job so he got bored, moped, and drank a lot. Kennedy tried to pump up his ego by sending him overseas. It was also a way to get him out of his hair. Bobby had him in his sights and word is LBJ was planning on making a deal with JFK on November 23 1963 where he would walk away from the ticket if Bobby would call off the hounds and stop leaking dirt to the Senate committee that was looking into corruption during his time as Senate Majority Leader. But the day before that could happen Kennedy rode in the motorcade in Dallas and the investigating into LBJ went away all on its own.
