Nixon was always far more deferential to Kennedy than Kennedy was to him. But Kennedy wasn't really deferential to anyone. They had a cordial relationship when JFK was in the senate and Nixon was VP. Kennedy didn't like the way Ike treated Nixon, calling Eisenhower a cold SOB but that may have had as much to do with Ike's treatment of Kennedy. Kennedy had similar feelings toward Churchill because neither man was that impressed by Kennedy. Kennedy played hardball in the 1960 campaign and Nixon, for whatever reason, never really got tough with Kennedy, not like he had in previous elections. Kennedy made a lot of disparaging comments about Nixon but when the Bay of Pigs blew up in his face one of the people he called for advice was Nixon. It was Nixon who told him not to give up the fight against Castro and to look for some form of justification to try again. That's exactly what Kennedy did, putting his brother Bobby on the case and that led to a whole host of problems. Nixon always wanted JFK's friendship. Kennedy was always indifferent about the relationship, but he was that way with most people. Would the world look the same if Nixon had won in 1960? One of the great what-if's not really considered much.
