  1. The United States has been operating within a Cold War framework for far too long for a variety of reasons. At the top of the list is the profitability of the construct. Why is NATO still even a thing? NATO was created at a time when Europe was weak and Stalin was the boogeyman. After the USSR collapsed NATO should have collapsed along with it. Instead they decided to grow the damn thing, inviting trouble by inviting in nations we were under no obligation to protect. We won the Cold War but we kept the game going all the same. But NATO is only one example of America dropping the ball. Nixon pointed out in one his first books that the U.S. has a natural dislike for empire and that would hamper our ability to manage world affairs in a sustainable fashion. I'm not an isolationist, but the Truman Doctrine should have been scrapped in the early 1990s and a leaner more pragmatic foreign policy should have been created. Now, as we drift toward the we-are-the-world utopia of the globalist set we are fighting the war of the bathrooms. God help us.
