This guy didn't make a mistake, he made a decision to lie. And what's with the "I come from an impoverished background" stuff? Is this guy saying people who are broke have some built-in honor? I grew up with a lot of folks who were broke, hell I was broke, and trust me, more than a few of the folks I met at that time were not the honorable type. And what exactly was this joker trying to accomplish here? Going on national TV to clean up...what exactly? I guess he figured he could waltz in and BS Tulsi because everyone has bought his BS over the years. I have met more than my share of "embellisher's" over the years and people who behave that way at his age have had lots of practice. But hey, if the bartender can get re-elected in NY I don't see why this guy doesn't have a chance.
