Events like Kristallnacht are why it sickens me when people throw around terms like Nazi and Fascist so loosely and compare politicians to Hitler. Evil on this level should never be trivialized unless you want a repeat of it.

The Japanese pulled off some of the worst atrocities any group of people has ever committed at any time in history. That is why I was so pissed when that half-an-idiot Tom Hanks said the war in the Pacific was so brutal because of American racial attitudes toward the Japanese. The Japanese benefitted from being a potential bulwark against communism in the Far East, even if it was done primarily through economic means. A lot of stuff got swept under the carpet and the reputations of several key WWII players, including Yamamoto got a revisionist paint-job. While the clean-up on aisle five may have worked on simps like Hanks who have a built-in disdain for America the nations in that region didn't forget. They knew good and damned well what really happened and the Japanese were awfully slow about owning up to their barbaric past. There should have been a Far Eastern equivalent to the Nuremberg trials but there wasn't and the fact it didn't bother enough people is a problem.

I agree. Not only were they in a good position to give Germany real trouble, Hitler's generals had passed along to British intelligence that if the Brits stay strong and don't appease Hitler they will engineer a coup once Hitler declares war on the Czechs. And he was ready to do just that. Chamberlain was so far out of his depth that he flew in at the last minute honestly believing he could get an agreement that Hitler would honor. Hitler was actually pissed at Mussolini for setting up the peace talks. Anyway, once Hitler was able to take the Sudetenland without firing a shot the generals lost heart. Hitler was so popular after that that any coup would have had almost zero popular support. That was the real tragedy of Munich, Hitler wanted to cut his own throat and the Brits and French left him off the hook. That was also the point where Stalin decided the Allies had no heart and any ideas he may have had about teaming up with them went out the window.

I am against capital punishment as a rule but I have always wondered what type of world might have evolved if cretins like Lenin, Stalin, and Castro would have been whacked when the powers that were had them in their grips. One of the great "what ifs" I suppose.

I thought you struck a proper balance and showed that Hitler and the Nazi's used intrigue as their primary weapon. As Al Pacino puts it in his portrayal of Lucifer; "I'm the hand up Mona Lisa's skirt, the one you never see coming. Underestimated from day one." That is the lesson of history.

I saw a documentary a few years ago where virologists were digging up remains from the Inuit tribes near the Arctic hoping to find a Spanish Flu culture that may have survived because of the bodies being buried in the permafrost of the region. I thought, okay, if they can find a culture and create a vaccine that would be cool, but if they had that thought wouldn't someone with no so good intentions have it as well? The fact it killed healthy adults made it especially dangerous. Tough time to be young person that's for sure.

The Brits and the French broke the world during and after the two world wars. Granted, America didn't help itself by stepping in a bunch of it and taking the blame for the effort, and we did make some bad calls of our own during the Cold War, but we weren't built to run an empire anyway. And it showed. But I still pin most of it on the Brits and French. I like the Beatles and mayonnaise, and Winnie Churchill, as jacked as some of his 19th Century beliefs were did stay in the fight and saved the west from the tyranny of the Nazi jackboots, but beyond that I don't have much time for either place. I used to visit Europe a lot. Those days are behind me. Wouldn't go there now. Why NATO is still a thing is beyond me, but I digress. Of all the screwed up situations though Vietnam ranks pretty high on the you-shoulda-stayed-the-hell-out-of-there list. The thing is, everyone from Truman through Nixon knew that, and we went in anyway, inch, by inch, then yard by yard, and eventually mile, by mile. So sad. But, like I say, nothing beats a good sandwich with mayo and the White Album is pretty cool. So there's that I suppose.

100 years later and we are still paying for the mess Britain and France created in the Middle East. Some things when they are set in motion cannot be stopped.

One thing everyone needs to remember is Stalin wasn't showing up the door shooting people and Stalin wasn't withholding food and watching people fall over and die. His minions did that. A tyranny is only as effective as the bureaucrats assigned to carry it out. Keep that in mind the next time you see media talking heads and academics talking about the sins of the fathers being handed down to people who's only crime is being born a certain color. May the children of God Stalin persecuted find peace in our Father's kingdom and may Stalin be brought to ultimate justice when The Lord opens the books on the day of judgement.

Interesting subject. I look forward to seeing how you cover the remaining days. That said, there are a few points that need to be addressed. Bobby Kennedy wasn't put in charge of Mongoose only a few days before the crisis began. He had been in charge of the "Get Castro" movement within the executive branch since writing the post-mortem on the Bay of Pigs with Maxwell Taylor and Allen Dulles in 61. By October 62 he was maniacal on the matter, pushing Bill Harvey, who was running the covert stuff going on in Cuba, and Richard Helm who had taken over special operations from Richard Bissel that year to the breaking point. It was his habit of going around the CIA's formal channel's and making a lot of noise on the island in support of his brother's insistence that something be done about Castro that led to the crisis in the first place. John McCone had good intel and was trying to warn them about missiles in Cuba for months but the Kennedy's thought they knew better. And there wasn't a great deal of tension between Maxwell Taylor and the Kennedy's. Bobby Kennedy named one of his kids after him and he was godfather to another. He was also one of the primary drivers of Flexible Response, and Counter-Insurgency, two of the bedrocks of Kennedy's foreign policy and Cold War strategy. he was considered more of an egghead and theorist by his military colleagues than a hawk. That's not to say he wasn't a soldier, but he wasn't cut from the same cloth as someone like Curtis LeMay.

I grew up in the "Duck and Cover" age, air raid drills at school, lessons on where the fallout shelters were and what was in em, that kind of thing. I got so conditioned to it early on that I accepted a nuclear exchange was inevitable. I got in a bit of trouble for telling the teacher during class that if they said a bomb was on the way I'd grab a mitt and go down to wherever it was going to hit and catch it. I'm not sure it dawned on her that my youthful cynicism came from the stuff adults were feeding into my still forming brain. Truth-be-told the place wasn't half as unstable as it is now. As Archie and Edith put it: "Those were the days."

NATO was established for one purpose, to prevent a Soviet invasion of Western Europe. NATO should have ended the moment the USSR ceased to be a thing. The problem is there is a lot of money to be made preparing for a war that will never come. Sorry, Putin is not Stalin, his armed forces are not the Red Army, and Germany is no longer a basket case. I mean, we've shrunk the navy to ridiculous levels in a region where there is an actual threat, why keep this old Cold War relic clunking along. Cha-ching! 💰That's why. Makes me sick and I spent a large portion of my adult life training for a war that never came and that was when the threat was real. It's long past time to say adios to NATO. Relocate the UN to Brussels and let them set up a phony defense network. I'd be okay spending a few tax dollars to rent the U-Hauls necessary to make that a reality but that's me.

That was good. I've been taking in these inter-war videos sort of piecemeal and they are well produced and well researched. I had a commander who attended a seminar on military strategy. Most of the western European and North American countries had one expert or so available to speak about how the mobilization and readiness processes worked for each one. Anyway when the guy who was there to talk about France and got up and started explaining who decides when the French go to war, my commander spoke up and said he was always under the impression that the Germans decided that issue. He said the lecturer was not amused. I thought it was funny, but that's me.

That's the way FDR saw it, until he declared war on France that is. And even then I'm not sure how much it really did bother the guy. Got to keep up appearances though. Between that and that pesky Constitution and those robed guys on the Court who kept using it to block his ambitions life for a wanna be dictator could get complicated. But damn, how he wished he could make his own trains run on time they way Il-Duce could.

Yeah, that comment was not only off-base it was crass. What did she want to do prove she can cuss like a sailor? Mission accomplished I suppose, but not exactly professional. I say this as someone who worked in a trade where the f-word was used as everything from a transient verb to a personal pronoun so trust me, I'm no shrinking violet. I just found it off-putting is all, but that's me.

Stalin in 1938: "We're not gonna send Soviet boys half way round the world to do a job Asian boys ought to be doin for themselves." Funny thing is, Stalin reneged on his agreements with every country he dealt with except Germany. Germany was the only country he made a deal with that he kept. Birds of a feather I suppose.

So where is the U.N. in all of this? 🤔 Oh yeah, I forgot, Israel's not involved. That explains it. That, and the fact Putin and Jinping have veto power over any actual action that might make a difference. How much more of this do we need to see before understand the U.N. has the same built-in flaw that killed the League of Nations? This isn't the first time they've been exposed for the fraud they are and it won't be the last. This was always in the cards for Putin. He's been waiting for decades to put the Soviet band back together and he knows he's running out of time. My heart aches for the Ukrainian people, it truly does. Right now, your best option is to be what Khrushchev liked to term: "A bone in the throat," or, as John McClain put it in Die Hard, be: "The fly in ointment, the monkey in the wrench, the pain in the ass." Don't look for a lot of help from the U.N. or anyone else for that matter. I wish is wasn't so, but alas, I fear it is.
