I agree. Not only were they in a good position to give Germany real trouble, Hitler's generals had passed along to British intelligence that if the Brits stay strong and don't appease Hitler they will engineer a coup once Hitler declares war on the Czechs. And he was ready to do just that. Chamberlain was so far out of his depth that he flew in at the last minute honestly believing he could get an agreement that Hitler would honor. Hitler was actually pissed at Mussolini for setting up the peace talks. Anyway, once Hitler was able to take the Sudetenland without firing a shot the generals lost heart. Hitler was so popular after that that any coup would have had almost zero popular support. That was the real tragedy of Munich, Hitler wanted to cut his own throat and the Brits and French left him off the hook. That was also the point where Stalin decided the Allies had no heart and any ideas he may have had about teaming up with them went out the window.
