I worked my share of restaurant jobs when I was a musician because it was the best way of ensuring a meal for that day so I have always had a soft spot for people who serve me my food, be it in a sit down place or delivery. I'm fairly generous but I rarely eat out anymore so that helps. But I have experienced what Matt is describing. When I was in the military the commissary used to hire retired vets to bag groceries', and they had a big sign saying "retired vet's working for tips only." I resented that because I thought they were trying to guilt trip people into tipping for something other retailers specifically forbid and the fact they were trying to get free labor. Those places made more than there share of profit. I know because I knew people who tallied the numbers for them. Anyway, I didn't tip them and I won't tip if someone hasn't earned it. I drop money in the tip jar at my local Firehouse Subs but they have a regular Sunday crew who know my name. I figure that extra effort is worth something.
