A good example of CGI overkill is the Pearl Harbor attack scene from the movie Midway. The sinking of the Arizona is so obviously fake it detracts from the drama of the scene. The actors and the story salvage the film but most of the effects are cheesy. Contrast that with the chariot race in the 1950s version of Ben-Hur. Actual chariots with actual drivers were flying through the air and while they used dummies for the parts where someone got runover it was still done with real horses. Another of my favorite's is the scene from Clear and Present Danger where they blow up an actual mansion. The house was owned by a couple who were getting divorced and they figured it was a good way to get rid of a place neither of them wanted. The director had one chance to get it right or the money they spent buying the place would have gone down the drain. Think anyone would have the stones to try that one these days? I agree CGI done well can do a lot for a movie but I was a musician once upon a time and I never liked it when my fellow artists wanted to throw a bunch of reverb and other effects on the music in the recording studio. I always preferred a clean sound. Maybe that's why I'm not much on big effects flicks. Give me good old dialogue and storylines that bring me in. But that's me.
