I'll be honest, I saw this movie when it was released and while my friends really liked it I found it to be a bit laborious. I mean, I thought it was okay but I wasn't over the moon about it. It did have moments though and I like Dennis Hopper's character the best. But it did make a mark and the line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning...it smells like victory," became a metaphor with a lot of different applications for us in the military. That said, after hearing the backstory it has new found respect from me. Thanks for the informative piece Drinker. I had no idea about any of this shit.
