  1. A very thoughtful and thorough review of one of the greatest movies ever. Rocky has it all. Burgess Meredith was one of the finest yet underrated character actors of all time as any fan of the Twilight Zone reruns will tell you and he is perfect as Mick. Burt Young gives a great performance as Paulie. I think everyone has had a Paulie in their life, a guy who is a bit of a loser and gripes a lot but is basically harmless. Carl Weathers was perfect as Apollo (I guess they wanted to use Ken Norton but it didn't work out) and like it did with Mr. T Rocky gave his career a boost. My favorite scene is when Rocky lands the haymaker and puts Apollo on his ass. The look on his face as he's lying on the ring says it all. Right then he discovered there was a lot more to Rocky than meets the eye. But this is a love story at the heart of it and Sylvester Stallone and Talia Shire are beyond great as Adrian and Rocky. I remember years ago I had a few too many and got into a bit of a fisticuff with one of the guys in the military barracks I was living in at the time (a drunken disagreement over music and its proper volume in mixed company). Anyway, the fight ended in a draw but I did get a pretty good shiner for my trouble. So, the next day, we are having this big award ceremony with Generals and Admirals and the like in attendance and I try to maintain a low profile as I arrive, not wanting any attention drawn to my eye. Well, buddies will be buddies, and my friends all stood up in the back and started yelling, "Adrian...Adrian..." I tell ya, it made hiding that shiner a bit more complicated than it needed to be. That's the thing about Rocky though. Everyone can relate to it in one way or another. I have yet to find someone who didn't like it and I suppose if I did it would be a red flag. I still think the character came full circle when he whipped Mr. T's ass but the other movies have done well so I guess I'm in the minority. But here's to Rocky and Adrian. I'm watching this review on Thanksgiving which is appropriate. If Tampa had an ice rink I might go for a skate before they closed.
