All they needed to do was take a good look at the American Civil War. That was expected to be a short war as well. The European observers who were there learned little and the lessons they learned were the wrong ones. The Civil War demonstrated what happens when technology leapfrogs tactics and the siege at Petersburg should have been instructive on how trench warfare would be carried out on a larger scale, including the folly of frontal assaults. But none of that sunk in. Everyone thought they'd be home by Christmas. And some of the the ones left standing did make it home in time for Christmas in 1918. The rest had to wait another year before they celebrated a Christmas at home, and it was a home that was never quite the same. WWI was one of those wars that served no purpose outside of population control and stirring up a boatload of problems, some of which we are still sorting out.
