The Great War

Germany was doomed from the start. Lousy allies, a navy that was dwarfed by Great Britain, a two-front strategy with too many moving parts, and an arrogance within the upper ranks that blinded them to the possibility that the enemy maybe wasn't quite the pushover they thought they were, especially tiny Belgium. Not exactly a winning combination. Maybe they would have had a puncher's chance if they hadn't dithered early on and allowed Russia to mobilize to the extent they did. That was the death knell. The Schlieffen Plan was flawed but it may have worked if the Germans hadn't had to divert forces to the East. When it devolved into a war of attrition Germany was toast. It's a shame millions had to die for a cause that was lost before it began. The Allies messed up when they stopped short of occupying Berlin. That failure helped feed the stab in the back myth as much as anything else. I'm not a big Roosevelt fan but he understood that and that is why he insisted on unconditional surrender in the next war over Churchill's objections. He knew the Germans needed to be convinced they got their clock cleaned or they would be back at it in another 20 years or so. Too bad. I like Germany. I like Germans. They had a chance to be a great power. Instead they had a spell where they became a great evil that had to be defeated. So much death. The 20th Century was a helluva time for war. Let's hope the 21st doesn't go down the same path. Civilization won't survive that war.
