I guess Nolan is okay if he stays in his lane. I don't travel in that lane so I won't offer any critique of the movies mentioned here. I do know history is not his lane. I say this because history requires actual, not conceptual, storytelling. I saw Dunkirk, unaware of Nolan's work as a director and it was one of the worst WWII movies I have ever seen. If you didn't know anything about the story of the evacuation at Dunkirk in June 1940 going in you probably knew less about it coming out. The guy was more interested in making a movie than telling a story. Like I say, that's all fine and well in some instances, have at it. But it doesn't work for people like me who enjoy a good story. That is why I am going to steer clear of Oppenheimer when it is released. It's an interesting story but I'm sure Nolan will be more interested in explosions, and multiple storylines running incongruent to each other just because. Kind of like the debacle that Ali turned out to be. Great subject matter, capable actor, lousy script, a story that didn't know what is supposed to convey. And don't even get me started on that hot mess called Elvis. Tom Hanks as Col. Tom Parker? I could have done a better job. I still don't know what accent he was going for in that movie. I find directors like Nolan to be incredibly full of themselves but that's me.
