@davidthompson4662 You were at war with Germany, not Japan. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Churchill was itching to declare war on Japan because he had promised to join America against whoever they were fighting be it Japanese, Germans, or Martians so long as it resulted in America joining the fight. Roosevelt would have preferred Churchill cool his jets and said as much in a cable but the Japanese said had already said to hell with everybody and declared war on Britain and the U.S so really the point was moot.. It was part of their six-month plan to run crazy and create a Pacific fortress. They needed British, French, and Dutch colonies to get the job done.

A significant contingent from Nova Scotia wanted to join the American colonies but the Brits shut that idea down. Just think, maybe Newfoundland would have an NFL franchise by now. Ya never know how these things turn out.

@DrVictorVasconcelos You're right, a lot of naval thinking was still geared around the idea of the battleship being the capital ships of the line at that time. Then Pearl Harbor and the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse by the Japanese put those theories to rest. After that it was all about aircraft carriers and fighting battles where the enemy ships never saw one another. But Churchill should have known better since it was British carriers that first showed the how obsolete battleships had become when they sank the Italian fleet at Taranto.

@prairiedweller8917 I don't think it was as much a matter of grievances as it was New England rebels stirring up the pot and local's salivating a bit over the potential windfall the fishing rights would have brought. The logistics and geography of the time would have made it difficult for Nova Scotia to provide any meaningful assist anyway.

@RealEstateMonkey1 What you wrote doesn't make sense; "actually, the american government declared war on germany 3 days after they did on germany." What does that even mean? And Hitler declared war on the United States first so if that is what you are referring to I'm not wrong.
